Surge in gastrointestinal illnesses among children confirmed to include norovirus
Norovirus‑driven gastrointestinal illness is increasing in Barbados, especially among children under five, prompting a public health advisory.
Health authorities have confirmed norovirus in multiple diarrhoeal samples from affected children, following a marked rise in gastrointestinal cases under five years of age. The Ministry of Health and Wellness reports that weekly case counts for this age group have moved from one to eight per week, which is above the threshold of concern. The highly contagious virus causes intense vomiting and diarrhoea that can lead to dehydration. Public health officials advise keeping affected children away from nurseries or school until at least 48 hours after symptoms cease, thorough sanitising of toys and utensils, and strict hygiene measures for food‑handling areas.
