Marine oil spill response and pollution control operation continues in Solomon Islands

Salvage and cleanup operations continue after a bauxite vessel ran aground and spilled heavy fuel oil along Solomon Islands coastal waters near a sensitive reef system.

The Hong Kong‑based MV Solomon Trader ran aground in bad weather, spilling heavy fuel oil across coastal waters, beaches, and a sensitive coral reef system. More than 80 tonnes of heavy fuel oil has dispersed across the sea and shoreline, affecting an ecologically delicate area. A joint Solomon Islands and Australian pollution‑control operation began several days after the grounding; the vessel has been stabilized and the active leak stopped. Containment booms are restricting the spread of oil into deeper ocean waters, and shoreline cleanup is underway with support from local communities. Authorities have warned coastal residents to avoid consuming locally caught fish and shellfish and have reported concerns that drinking water sources are being contaminated, forcing dependence on rainwater and increasing risks of diarrheal disease.
